In all the MMDCEs, in the Country and Kintampo Municipal Assembly as one of the Municipalizes in the country, environmental sanitation management is a huge responsibility. It is for this reason the Government of Ghana is re-introducing the National Sanitation Day Programme (NSDP)to improve waste management and enhance environmental cleanliness across the country.

As the Kintampo Municipal has an on-going solid waste collection contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, however, it is limited in scope and largely concentrated in some parts of the Kintampo Township. It is obvious that vast public and private spaces would not be cleaned so this (NSDP) would ensure citizens to assist the Assemblies cleaning those spaces.

Kintampo: Pig farmers sensitized on African Swine Fever

The Kintampo Municipal Assembly Department of Agriculture sensitized residents on African Swine Fever (ASF) in some communities in the Municipality.

The exercise carried out by Dr. David Mensah, the Veterinary Doctor and his staff was targeted at pig farmers and aimed at informing and educate them on the signs and symptoms of the disease and its prevention since there is no known vaccine.

Dr. Mensah revealed that, Ghana as a country is still trying its best to get Vaccine or treatment for the disease but so far it has not been successful yet, so for that matter farmers should try not to allow their pigs to be attacked by this harmful disease/sickness which has hit the country for some time now.

Farmers were taken through signs such as; high fever, decreased appetite, red or blotchy skin lesions, diarrhea, vomiting, coughing, difficulty breathing and in severe cases, sudden death.

On prevention they were advised to

• limit access to farms;

• to undertake rigorous cleaning and disinfection, and avoid the introduction of contaminated materials,

• restricting access to the farm by visitors,

• introduction of footbath at entrances and exits,

• avoid feeding pigs with garbage such as leftover food or household waste,

• isolate sick pigs from the herd and keep visiting them always to monitor them.

Farmers expressed gratitude to the team for enlightening them on the out-break of the disease(ASF) which have become a worry to them as farmers affected by the African Swine Fever (ASF) have lost their source of income and now counting their losses.

Most pork sales and family are also complaining of the price of pork in the market it is their sours of protein and is expensive in the market.

Meanwhile Dr. Mensah revealed in an interview assured that samples of the dad pigs have been taken to Accra for further examination.

Kintampo Municipality Hit with Rain Storm

Residents of the Kintampo Municipality had a shock of their lives after rainstorm with lighting hit the Municipality destroying properties running into thousands of cedis.

Mr. Robert Aparik a retired Environmental Health officer who went on retirement had his four-bedroom house with a provision shop burnt to ashes.

According to Mr. Aparik he was in the room when the rain stated at about 9 O’clock that evening and all he heard was people outside shouting fire only for him to come out to see one of his rooms on-fire.

The Ghana National Fire Service assisted by other individuals came to help put off the fire but that didn’t stop the whole house being burnt to ashes.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Kintampo Municipal Assembly Mr. Isaac Donkor visited the scene with some officers from the Assembly including the Municipal Fire commander, and the Director of NADMO to ascertain the level of distraction coursed by the rain.

In an interview with the Municipal fire commander Mr. Domimic Turmu Prempier revealed that the fire outbreak was as a result of the rain lighting which occurred. He was of the view that anytime there is fire out-break, citizens try to put off the fire themselves, and only seek the assistance of the Fire Service when their efforts failed to yield results and by then the situation may have gotten out of hand.

He thus advised the citizens to always first call the fire service emergency line before any other persons would come to help.

Mr. Isaac Donkor MCE was very sad about the incident, because looking at what was left, the whole building has to be pulled down and Mr. Aparik now on retirement it would be very difficult for him and the family.

Mr. Isaac called on private individual and organizations to support Mr. Aparik with building materials and other items which can help him bounce back in life with the family.

But before that the Municipal Assembly and NADMO presented some relief items such as, four (4) student Mattresses, one (1) bag of 25Kgs rice, four (4) robber basin, four robber (4) bakes, ten (10) robber cups, ten (10) boxers of mosquito cruel and an-disclose amount of money.
